The 2021 National

HBCU Speech and Debate Championship

The National HBCU Speech and Debate League is proud to invite you to the 2021 National HBCU Speech and Debate Championship hosted virtually Feb 27-28, 2021.  This tournament will be a hybrid tournament with prelims of IE’s being asynchronous and elimination rounds of IE’s and all debates to be held synchronously.

This tournament represents an opportunity for HBCU students to compete against their peers.  In addition, this is an opportunity for represented schools to come together and maintain a forensics organization for HBCUs.

The organization we have created has oversight of this tournament and also seeks to spread speech and debate education and competition to HBCUs all over the country.  The skills learned in speech and debate are valuable tools for students in the classroom and beyond the walls of their alma mater.  For this reason, this newly formed organization will seek to promote forensics education in all HBCUs.

The tournament will feature IPDA Debate, NPDA Debate, and ten of the American Forensics Association Individual Events; this tournament will also feature Slam Poetry and Interviewing events.

Finalists in all events will receive awards.  Sweepstakes trophies for Individual Events and Overall will also be awarded.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  We are very excited about this tournament and look forward to hosting this event.

We understand that this year will look and feel different than any other tournament we have had before.  We want to ensure everyone that we are working to bring you the best tournament experience possible. If you have any questions, please reach out to us, and we will guide you through every step of the way.

Considerations

There are two important accounts that will need to be set up for this tournament.  We first ask that you please set up an account on Speechwire.com.  This is the tournament tab center that will be where you receive ballots after the tournament but will also upload your videos for the rounds that are asynchronous.  If you log on to the speechwire website you will find many videos and tutorials on how to create an account and how to upload videos for asynchronous portions.  BUT if you have questions or find something hard to do please reach out and we set up a time to get it all taken care of.  The next website you will need to create an account in is Yaatly.com.  This is the tournament hosting website, on the top right of the website click on the signup/sign-in portion and you just need to put your information to sign up.  As stated above if you have any questions please contact us to assist you.

YOUTUBE

The asynchronous portion of the tournament will need you to upload videos to speechwire.  In order to do this you need to upload your performance video to youtube as UNLISTED but set the viewing to PUBLIC, this will ensure that we can view the video and that it won’t be found or violate any copyright laws.  We are asking that on top of your upload through speechwire, you also provide a sheet PER TEAM of all the video links.  This will allow the tournament staff to view the links, to make sure that we can see them and provide them in case there are any issues on the back end.  Please submit that sheet to Joel Anguiano at jooelanguiano007@gmail.com by February 14th, 2021 at 11:59 p.m.  Your recording will be evaluated for performance and content so please make sure that we can see you and hear you, other than that NO OTHER technical issues will be used to evaluate your performance.  You will NOT need special lighting or sound equipment to compete, the majority of students will be using your phone, as long as you can be heard and scene that is the ONLY requirement for participation, the judges will also be instructed NOT to use things such as lightening or the technical abilities in the video to be used to evaluate performances.  We want as many people participating as possible so please do not think that you need to have special audio or visual equipment to compete.  If you have any questions or need assistance please reach out and we will assist you the best way we can.
