HBCU National Speech and Debate Association
Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been combating education inequity for more than one hundred and fifty years. However, a substantial lack of funding has required HBCUs to cut back on programs like speech and debate competition, furthering educational inequity. The Association was initially started to combat the educational injustice created by a lack of funding for competitive speech and debate. Though the mission has not changed, educational inequity is not exclusive to HBCUs or even college students. Therefore, The HBCU National Speech and Debate League is a reflection upon the need for educational equity at various levels and institutions.

MISSION
The HBCU National Speech and Debate League is committed to providing students and educators, at Historically Black Colleges and Universities the skills and training necessary for leadership development in traditional and emerging career fields; positioning them for personal and professional excellence. The league prepares students for professional/graduate-level education through enhancement of research, analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills; increasing appreciation for the arts, global awareness; and the communication of current events, literature, and creative thought, through performance and free speech.
The HBCU National Speech and Debate League is dedicated to developing and fostering significant educational opportunities and benefits for students of Historically Black College and Universities. The League will expand the historic tradition of HBCU exceptionalism and societal equity through speech and debate excellence, free speech, and civic engagement.
